Parent
Guidelines

We
encourage you to be with your children during the dental visit, but you
may choose to remain in the reception area during treatment
appointments if you wish. We do need to have you in the
treatment room for all examination and emergency
appointments in order to determine a diagnosis and to obtain your written,
informed consent for further treatment.
For additional treatment
appointments after the written, informed consent is obtained from you
as parent or legal guardian, an adult, over 18 years old, may bring
your children for their appointments.
This adult must stay in the
office at all times while your child is receiving dental treatment.
Be a Silent Observer
This
allows us to maintain the proper communication with your child and allows your
child to listen to just one voice. Please avoid saying "it is not going to hurt"
or use words like "needle" or "shot". Your child
may actually focus on this one word and expect it to hurt! Normally children will listen to their
parents instead of
the appropriate member of our dental team and may not hear what our
doctors and assistants are saying. You may also be giving them incorrect
or misleading information.
Many children may try to control
the situation in ways that they have found to be successful for them
at home or in the past. "Acting out" is normal, but is not
acceptable during dental treatment appointments. Some children may do better
without the presence of the parent. If the doctor feels that may
be the case, you may be asked to step away from
your child's view.
If you feel uncomfortable at any
time, please let us
know. Many times your personal memories of past dental experiences may cause
you to be uncomfortable with what our staff needs to accomplish at
any specific time during the appointment. We can work together
to decide if completing treatment that day is best for your child.
Similarly, we reserve the right to
stop treatment at any time if the doctor determines that
is the best and safest option for your child. If the appointment is shortened by
the doctor for any reason, we will temporize any incomplete
treatment and re-appoint your child on a day that is
better for your child.
We are delighted to welcome you
and your family to our practice. By following these guidelines, you
will help us deliver the highest quality care for your child and
inspire them to have confidence in themselves at the dentist's
office.
You can
actively help in these very important ways to ensure the
success of your child's visit.
